Staunton River State Park was recognized in 2007 as a National Historic Landmark and a Virginia Historic Landmark. Many structures in the park, including the cabins, pool-house and picnic shelters, are little changed from when they were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1930s. Tucked away in south central Virginia, the park lies between the Dan and Staunton Rivers at the threshold of Buggs Island Lake (also known as Kerr Reservoir). The largest lake in Virginia is only one of the park’s many attractions, which include an Olympic size pool with a 70-foot waterslide, a smaller log slide and the Pollywog Pond, which is a water playground for children (there is a size limit on this pool). The shaded campgrounds, rustic cabins, picturesque picnic shelters, well-maintained nature trails, and plenty of exciting outdoor opportunities for the whole family make Staunton River State Park the perfect place for your vacation.
In 2015, Staunton River State Park was certified as an International Dark Sky Park by the IDA (International Dark Sky Association). This is a an outstanding achievement, as Staunton River is the third such park designated east of the Mississippi and the 25th in the world. Being an International Dark Sky Park, Staunton River and the surrounding area is committed to maintaining the dark skies in the area, and serves as the perfect location for the Staunton River Star Party!
The Chapel Hill Astronomical and Observational Society
The Chapel Hill Astronomical and Observational Society (CHAOS) is the local astronomy club in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. We welcome everyone interested in astronomy and at our club meetings and observing sessions we provide a friendly atmosphere where you can increase your knowledge of astronomy, enjoy the wonders of the night sky, and most importantly, have fun with other members of the club. We vary widely in experience and knowledge, from beginners to professional astronomers, but we all share an interest in the night sky.
CHAOS holds monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of every month at Carol Woods Community Center from 7:00 to about 8:30. We conduct some club business, discuss upcoming astronomical events, then have a presentation, followed by some socializing. The presenter may be a CHAOS member, or a member of the astronomy faculty at one of the local universities, or may be on the staff at Morehead Planetarium. CHAOS holds observing sessions at various times during each month, and often participates in sessions sponsored by the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center.
When visiting the star party, feel free to stop CHAOS members (look for our t-shirts) and ask questions about astronomy or equipment. We will be happy to share our knowledge and views through our scopes!
